The Life Support Manager (LSM) will ensure the smooth operation and maintenance of life support systems (LSS) within the ISER’s aquarium facilities at CIROM in La Parguera, Puerto Rico. The LSM will oversee the design, installation, operation, and maintenance of LSS, including filtration systems, water quality monitoring, and equipment maintenance. The LSM will work closely with the Managers and Staff Biologists to provide optimal conditions for the health and well-being of all nursery installations.

REQUIREMENTS
We seek a highly organized and motivated individual who can maintain a positive, enthusiastic attitude to join our team. Key competencies include scientific and mechanical aptitude and basic plumbing, carpentry, and electronics knowledge. The successful candidate must be able to work flexible hours and participate in an on-call and evening and weekend schedule. This position includes working outside in wet/humid and hot environments during all seasons and environmental conditions. Some travel throughout Puerto Rico and heavy lifting (over 50 lbs) will also be required. The ideal candidate will have a bachelor's or master’s degree in biological sciences or a related field, basic aquaculture experience, and the ability to work independently.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND SCOPE
• Oversee the design, installation, and commissioning of LSS for land-based nurseries (corals, sea urchins and crabs), quarantine areas, and other aquatic systems (larval tanks and microalgal cultures)
• Develop and implement maintenance protocols, schedules, and procedures for LSS components, including filtration systems, pumps, heaters, chillers, and chemical dosing systems
• Monitor and maintain water quality parameters such as temperature, salinity, pH, dissolved oxygen, and nutrient levels
• Perform regular inspections, testing, and troubleshooting of LSS equipment to ensure proper functioning and identify potential issues
• Coordinate with project and nursery managers for repairs, upgrades, and equipment installations
• Conduct routine water quality testing and analysis, including chemical and biological parameters
• Interpret water quality data and make necessary adjustments to maintain optimal conditions for aquatic species

• Implement appropriate filtration, sterilization, and treatment methods to ensure water quality and prevent the spread of diseases

• Monitor and maintain the cleanliness and integrity of all nurseries, including the larval rearing systems and microalgal cultivation
• Provide training and guidance to nursery staff on LSS operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting procedures
• Ensure adherence to established protocols for handling and acclimating new aquatic arrivals
• Foster a culture of safety, professionalism, and continuous improvement within the LSS team
• Assist in developing and managing the LSS budget, including equipment purchases, maintenance supplies, and water treatment chemicals
• Maintain inventory records for LSS components, spare parts, and supplies


Requirements

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
• Bachelor's degree in a relevant field such as biology, marine science, or environmental science
• Proven experience in managing life support systems in aquariums or similar aquatic facilities
• Strong knowledge of aquarium filtration systems, water chemistry, and aquatic species' care requirements
• Familiarity with mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems related to LSS.
• Excellent problem-solving and troubleshooting skills
• Strong organizational and time management abilities
• Effective communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work collaboratively with a diverse team
• Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and handle multiple priorities
• Knowledge of applicable regulations and standards for aquarium water quality and LSS operations
• Willing to work weekends and odd hours
• Willing to be outdoors, work in inclement weather and rough terrain
• Ability to work effectively with limited supervision
• Be physically able to push, pull, and lift to 50 pounds
• Valid driver’s license and reliable means of transportation

ADDITIONAL PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
• A relevant certification (e.g., Certified Aquatic Facility Operator)
• Knowledge of the biology, physiology and aquaculture of corals, sea urchins, and crabs.
• At least 6 months of experience working with land-based nurseries or closed systems

• Ability to foster good interpersonal relationships with colleagues. May be asked to represent their team on various working groups
• Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively
• Excellent written and verbal communication in English and Spanish
• Outreach and education experience
• Organization, time management, and communication skills
• Ability to effectively follow directions
• Knowledge of Caribbean coral reef ecology and/or biology
